Americano in Review
Americano is an ongoing analysis of American culture and geography, and more so an examination of conscience through the sublime. Growing up as a first generation American, western culture is naturally engrained in my lifestyle yet still feels intrusive to my origins. There is a cultural detachment that accompanies residency within this country. We like to believe that we are tolerant to foreign ideas, but in order to be a participating citizen you have to surrender tradition in exchange for ours. As a country, we are ignorant of the outside, we indulge exceptionally in our freedoms and scrutinize anyone who disagrees. The idea of patriotism personally never caught on, I'm too much of a pessimist to praise the few advancements that came from nonsensical wars, power driven individuals and the need for immediate gratification. I have never felt the pride to call myself an American, or for that matter to accept being referred to one when I see people as a collective existence, not a property.
Every summer as far as I can remember, I have been privileged to travel the United States. Throughout my travels I have been observant of the social disunion and indeed cultural differences amidst different regions, most noticeably the changing landscape that serves as a reminder that you are away from home, as if the people weren't enough to tell you themselves. Often times I am astounded at the beauty, simply the possibility of the nature hidden beyond the puzzles of shopping centers and suburbias. The people as well have surprised me with their immeasurable hospitality and simply different ways of life. Having been raised on the outskirts of Los Angeles, it's easy to overlook the reality of Middle-America. Each state I have visited has become a backdrop to my memories, sometimes pleasant, other times less than miserable, but all priceless. As I continue to tour The United States stumbling across small towns and diners, rest stops and supermarkets, I can't help but be reminded just how much I love this country.
